In recent years, society has come to better understand, as well as embrace individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. However, bias and prejudices still exist and can place unfair pressure on LGBT individuals who wish to ‘come out’ and live more openly meaningful, productive lives. The stigmas associated with the LGBT community can be found within families, in the workplace, among religious communities and even amongst friends. Counseling may help LGBT individuals learn how to address these challenges head-on with self-confidence. Furthermore, LGBT counseling may afford you the tools you need to overcome certain stress factors including:

  • Guilt or shame
  • Feelings of loss or hopelessness
  • Social or family discrimination
  • Homophobia
  • Health issues

The American Psychological Association reports that LGBT individuals are more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to suffer from major depression, anxiety and even suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Much of this is thought to be caused in part by both direct and indirect discrimination. LGBT counseling is available to help with some of the mental health complications that may arise due to the preconceptions and judgments of other people.

The Wellsource Behavioral Health Clinic is proud to be a Safe Zone for all individuals regardless of culture, ethnicity, race, faith, gender, or sexual orientation. We encourage education, self-acceptance, and positive identity formation. If you are struggling with any LGBT related issue, it is important that you visit with an open, competent, and experienced mental health professional. You will feel free to engage in open discussions that may help you gain the most from your time in therapy. You may also find an opportunity to share your experiences with other people in similar situations. Counseling is offered on an individual, family, and group basis.
